PreK - 5th Grade:
(1st Place Winner) The Arrival of the Auspicious Dragon (Abigail Chen)
In this vibrant Chinese New Year painting, a majestic red dragon with shimmering golden scales symbolizes prosperity and good fortune. I added "fu" and "fortune" signs, peaches, blooming peonies and pink-white curvy clouds in the background to show the blessing, joy, prosperity, and celebration in the New Year.
(1st Place Winner) Rainbow Dragon's Lantern Dance Under the Stars (Sophia Wang)
A colorful, pretty dragon dances in a forest that sings, and there are lots of colorful lanterns in the sky for this special night party. It looks happy and fun, and it is wishing everybody a very Happy Lunar New Year of 2024!

In my watercolor painting for Chinese New Year 2024, a lively aqua-green dragon dances energetically amidst a backdrop of delicate pink fans. The dragon seems to come to life with its vibrant colors and swirling movements, bringing excitement and celebration to the scene. Below, elegant and noble peonies gracefully float, adding a touch of beauty and charm to this festive artwork.

Dragon is flying in the sky, celebrating the New Year with everyone in the city with fireworks.

The happiness and energy of the dancing dragon are the ideas of this artwork. The lantern with "fu" sign and the colorful background are to show the celebratory atmosphere for the Lunar New Year.
6th - 9th Grade:
(1st Place Winner) A New Beginning (Grace Lin)
A woman is walking at dawn down the streets of her hometown. Lanterns represent good fortune and prosperity while she continues walking for a new beginning and leaves behind her troubles.
(2nd Place Winner) Lantern Dragon (Emma Ming)
2024 is the Year of Dragon. Red lanterns represent family, wealth, happiness and prosperity. Combining both elements into my artwork is the ultimate celebration of the Lunar New Year of 2024 and the tradition of Chinese culture.
(3rd Place Winner) Dragon (Jevon Lin)
(Honorable Mention) 龙 (Jewel Li)
In my artwork, I wanted to convey the fierceness of the dragon. I used the colors red, yellow and gold because they are significant colors relating to Lunar New Year. The dragon is in a bold stance, teeth and claws bared to show this.
(Honorable Mention) Spring of Spring (Olivia To)
Life, spring, hope, joy, happiness, nature, and peacefulness.
(Honorable Mention) Dancing Among the Firecrackers (Josephine Wong)
I always dream of firecrackers going off while the dragon dance is happening, so I decided to draw it out. I hope it will bring luck and joy for the whole Year of the Dragon!
10th - 12th Grade:
(1st Place Winner) Water Dragon (Lily Gomez)
I was inspired by water and depicted how it flows, representing new beginnings in the New Year.
(2nd Place Winner) Dragon Deez (Gabriela Galan)
Cherry blossoms represent Spring and new life. Water represents rebirth and renewal. The lotus flower represents inspiration for change.
(3rd Place Winner) Dragon’s Year (Kylee Kong)
Watching the tiger dance has been something that I’ve done with my parent every Chinese New Year since I was young. It’s something that we went to even when we went to Malaysia. For the longest time, I had thought the tigers were dragons so I still associate the Chinese dragon with that image. It is something quit personal for me and a comforting reminder of my childhood. I decided to do this piece in black ink on beige paper to emphasize the ferocity and boldness of the “dragon” and to demonstrate the beauty in its design.
(Honorable Mention) Apalala (Faith Viola)
I was inspired to create this dragon's eye because it symbolizes protection. It's better to go into the Lunar New Year with protection. Apalala is a water-dwelling dragon. When I was creating this piece, I used my clay building and painting skills in order to sculpt the dragon's eye. I used different methods like scoring and slipping to help with the attachment process. I wish everyone a happy and safe Lunar New Year.
Adults:
(1st Place Winner) Luck Dragon吉祥龙年 (Ming Sun)
(2nd Place Winner) May Everything Be Auspicious In 2024 (Mei Chan)
My inspiration came from the Chinese bird and flower painting at the China Institute. I was so happy to see the floral painting and it looks so different from Western style paintings. Hence, I want to paint this subject matter to celebrate the New Year.

Magic Dragon protects the peaceful land.
(Honorable Mention) Dragon Tree of Life (JZ)
This tree of life in the shape of a dragon will bring prosperity, and energy to 2024 - The year of wood dragon!
